Visiting a website that does not have a search box can be frustrating if you need to find something quickly. Although you can use a web browser’s Find tool to search for text, the browser will look for the specified text only on that page and not the entire website. Fortunately, there is an easy way to look for words or phrases on a website that does not have a search box.
Internet search engines (e.g., Google, Bing) provide operators that you can use to conduct more advanced searches. You probably use one of these operators — double quotes — already in your searches without realizing it. When you enclose a phrase in double quotes, you are telling the search engine to look only for that exact phrase.
Google, Bing, and Yahoo provide another search operator that is quite helpful: the “site:” operator. When you use it, the search engine will examine a particular website for the specified text. Thus, you can look for a word or phrase on a website that does not have a search box.
For example, if you want to search the The Miller Group website (themillergroup.com) for information about email, you would type:
site:themillergroup.com email
If you want to search for a phrase, you can put it in double quotes like this:
site:themillergroup.com “Office 365”
The “site:” operator might also work in other search engines besides Google, Bing, and Yahoo. However, it will not work when a website specifically requests not to be included in any search engine results.
